Our Services
If you like your kitchen layout but can’t stand the color of your cabinets, professional cabinet painting can completely transform the look and feel of your space—without a full remodel.
At Shelly’s Kitchens, we specialize in spray-finished cabinet painting for homeowners in the greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan area. You get a smooth, durable, factory-like finish, not a roller-and-brush paint job.
Brighten and Modernize Your Kitchen
Painting your cabinets is one of the fastest, most impactful upgrades you can make:
- Turn dark, heavy cabinets into bright, clean focal points
- Modernize dated wood tones with fresh whites, creams, or greiges
- Tie your cabinets into new countertops, flooring, or backsplash
- A Kitchen That Finally Fits
You keep the cabinets you already have but your kitchen looks and feels completely different.
Why Our Cabinet Painting Is Different
Not all “cabinet painting” is created equal.
- Use a true 2K wood coating formulated for cabinets, not standard wall or trim paint
- Spray doors and drawers in our Robotic Ultra Spray System (R.U.S.S.) for even coverage
- Cure the finish in our environmentally controlled spray booth, so it hardens into a durable, tack-free surface
- A smoother, more professional finish than typical on-site painting
- Better resistance to chipping, scratching, and everyday wear
- A finish that cleans up easily with common household cleaners

Our Cabinet Painting Process
1. Design & Color Consultation
We start with an in-home visit:
- Evaluate your existing cabinets, countertops, and flooring
- Talk through your style and what you’d like your kitchen to feel like
- Help you choose cabinet colors and sheens that work with your space
- Discuss hardware, hinges, and optional upgrades
2. Protection & Prep
Before any painting happens:
- Floors, counters, and nearby surfaces are carefully covered
- Doors and drawers are labeled and removed
- Frames are cleaned, sanded, repaired as needed, and prepped for finishing
Proper prep is what makes the finish last.
3. Shop Painting: Doors & Drawers
At our shop, your doors and drawers go through a controlled process:
- Deep cleaning and degreasing
- Repairs, caulking, and sanding
- Sprayed with our 2K wood coating using R.U.S.S. for consistent coverage
- Baked in our spray booth so the finish cures hard and smooth
This is where the “factory” look and feel comes from.
4. In-Home Frame Painting
While doors and drawers are in the shop, we:
- Prep and paint your cabinet frames on-site
- Use tools and methods designed for in-home application
- Keep overspray, dust, and fumes controlled
We work efficiently so your kitchen stays as usable as possible through the project.
5. Reassembly & Final Details
Once everything is cured:
- We reinstall doors and drawers and adjust everything for smooth operation
- Install any new hardware or hinges you’ve chosen
- Walk through the finished kitchen with you, handling any small touch-ups
You’re left with freshly painted cabinets that look like they were made that way.
Painting vs Refinishing – Which Do You Need?
Both painting and refinishing can transform your kitchen. The right choice depends on:
Existing finish and wood species
How much grain you want to see
Whether you’re also changing doors or just color
If you’re not sure which is right, we can compare options with you. You can also read more about kitchen cabinet refinishing.
We’ll be honest about what makes the most sense for your cabinets.
Popular Cabinet Colors and Finishes
We can match nearly any color, but some favorites in West Michigan include:
Warm and cool whites
Soft greiges and light taupes
Two-tone combinations (e.g., white uppers, darker lowers or island)
How Much Does Cabinet Painting Cost?
Cabinet painting is usually less expensive than replacing cabinets and competitive with refinishing.
Cost depends on:
- Number of doors and drawers
- Size and layout of your kitchen
- Existing finish and condition
- Extras like new hardware, hinges, or doors
