About Shelly’s Kitchens & Designs

Shelly’s Kitchens & Designs is a family-run, cabinet-focused company based in Jenison and serving homeowners across the greater Grand Rapids / West Michigan area.

We specialize in professional spray refinishing and painting of kitchen cabinets, new doors and drawer fronts, and coordinated countertop updates—so you can fall in love with your kitchen again without a full remodel.

Our History

From Wallpaper to Kitchens

Shelly Kuipers started in the late 1980s, hanging wallpaper and taking on small painting jobs. Demand grew quickly, and she soon had a small crew and a steady stream of work from local designers, insurance companies, and builders.

When wallpaper work slowed down and new construction cooled, Shelly pivoted. A simple dresser project—rescued from the side of the road, painted, and sold with multiple buyers fighting over it—sparked a “there’s a market here” moment. That’s how Shelly’s Dressers was born.

From the garage to increasingly larger shops (finally with a bathroom and running water, as Shelly likes to point out), she built a business around sprayed finishes and a reputation for quality.

From Dressers to Kitchens

As more people saw the smooth, sprayed finish on Shelly’s furniture, they started asking:

“Can you do this on my kitchen cabinets?”

At first, Shelly wasn’t excited about sanding and spraying inside people’s homes. But she and her team developed a system:

  • Remove doors and drawer fronts and finish them in the shop
  • Finish cabinet frames on-site with the same product line, applied in a way that works inside the home
Homeowners loved the results. Referrals picked up. People kept asking why the company was called “Shelly’s Dressers” when so much of the work was in kitchens—so Shelly’s Kitchens & Designs was born.

Investing in a Better Finish

In 2018, Shelly made a major investment that changed everything: a fully enclosed, state-of-the-art spray booth and oven.

The goal was simple:

  • Give clients the absolute best cabinet finish possible
  • Protect the health of her team with proper filtration and air handling

The new setup:

  • Eliminated dust, bugs, pollen, and “fuzzies” from the finish
  • Allowed for a baked-on coating that looks and performs like a factory finish

Today, that booth and oven work together with a robotic spray system and a professional 2K wood coating to give homeowners the kind of finish most painters simply can’t match.

Passing the Torch

Shelly is still very involved, but she’s also in the process of transitioning ownership to her daughter Amanda and son-in-law Jason.

  • Amanda has been the lead spray-booth technician from the start and now co-owns the company.
  • Jason, also a co-owner, oversees the field technicians and brings years of hands-on experience with the team.

Their investment is more than financial—they both work in the business every day. The plan is for Shelly’s Kitchens & Designs to stay a family business for years to come.

Field Technicians

Our friendly field technicians handle everything that happens inside your home. They carefully remove your cabinet doors and drawers, protect your space while they work, and prepare and finish your cabinet frames in place. Once the shop work is complete, they return to reinstall everything with care. The entire process is designed to be efficient and respectful so your kitchen stays as usable and disruption-free as possible throughout the project.

Shop Crew

At our shop, our specialized crew focuses on the details that create a flawless finish. Each door and drawer front is deep-cleaned and degreased, repaired as needed with fillers and sanding, then finished using our state-of-the-art spray booth, oven, and robotic spray system. This controlled process is what delivers the smooth, durable, factory-style finish Shelly’s Kitchens is known for.

Lulu, the Shop Dog

No team introduction would be complete without Lulu, our beloved shop dog and unofficial employee of the month. Lulu greets the crew each morning, keeps a watchful eye on break time, and brings a little extra joy to every workday at the shop.
